About me

Telling natures stories in wood

David is rumored to the be the love child of Jane Fonda and Barry Goldwater. At birth he was abandoned at a remote rest stop in southern Montana by a mother who was unfit to care for him. He was adopted and raised by a pack of grizzly bears. It was here he learned to love nature and pee in the woods. at 7 years old the bears traded him to a traveling circus for a jar of honey. The circus master was a cruel man who often beat him and made him set up the big top tent by himself in the rain. In his spare time, when he was not hauling water for the elephants, David learned to juggle chainsaws and soon became the star act. Late at night, when all the days chores were done and the members of the circus slept he would go outside the wagon and practice chainsaw carving on telephone poles under the light of the moon. When he escaped the circus at 18 he went to the University of Montana and then the University of Washington where he studied something wholly unrelated to his passion of creating art. After University he fell into the only avenue open to an exceptionally good looking man with a liberal arts degree, (no, not Barista) exotic dancing. He traveled the world with Thunder down under and Chip n Dales but was forced to leave dancing because the other dancers were always upstaged. This was a blessing in disguise as he now had lots of free time to master his art. For many years he traveled to state fairs, carving contests and other events selling his art. In around 2010 a customer and friend from Columbia Falls Montana invited him up to do a show in front of his store. Since then David has made the flathead valley his base of sales during the summer months. In 2023 he purchased property in Hungry Horse and moved his sales gallery there.

I realize no one actually reads the Bio page so if you happened to read this far please note that much of the above is perhaps not entirely true and may be completely fabricated from the mind of someone who spends too much time working. Some of it, however, is absolutely true. I was born and raised in Montana and I’ve never been a barista.  But mom (who was way more special to me than Hanoi Jane ever could be) gave me my first set of high quality chisels when I was 14.   I still have them and use them from time to time.    I carved wood and soap until I learned it was not the same as soap stone.  I used carving in college as a wonderful diversion from study.    I paid my way through UW as a magician and balloon animal guy.   I think that is where I decided making things more fun than law.     After college I annoyed my roommates by carving late into the night and leaving wood shavings on the couch.  I had never used a chainsaw for more than cutting firewood until I met an old guy on the side of the road who was having way more fun than me.  He was kind enough to show me how to use the tools and after a few years the hobby got in the way of the day job and well…I just sorta quit showing up at work.   I love wood, it has warmth that stone and bronze do not but Spam carving is the best!   Ok, maybe not the best but coming up with fun names for the piece was fun.  I love what I do but make no mistake, this is a lot harder on the body than when I was in my 20’s.   Dad was right, I should have got that law degree and left art as a hobby.   Oh well.  no point complaining now, just grab another aspirin and off I go.
